Right to Receive a Good Faith Estimate

Starting January 1, 2022, the No Surprises Act (NSA) protects uninsured or self-pay
individuals from many unexpectedly high medical bills. The Act requires that health care
providers and facilities give uninsured (or self-pay) individuals an estimate for the cost of their
health care before the individual agrees to get the item or service. This means that you have a right to ask for a good faith estimate for the cost of 12 months of sessions before consenting to services with me. This includes a list of services (e.g. individual or couples counseling), associated costs, applicable diagnosis codes and service codes, and information on the dispute process if you are billed $400 or more higher than the estimate.

  • You have a right to receive a GoodFaith Estimate for the total expected cost of any non-emergency items or services. This includes related costs like medical tests, prescription drugs, equipment, and hospital fees.

  • Make sure your health care provider gives you a Good Faith Estimate in writing at least 1 business day before your medical service or item. You can also ask your healthcare provider, and any other provider you choose, for a Good Faith Estimate before you schedule an item or service.

  • If you receive a bill that is at least $400 more than your Good Faith Estimate, you can dispute the bill.

  • Make sure to save a copy or picture of your Good Faith Estimate. For questions or more information about your right to a Good Faith Estimate, visit https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises.

Please feel free to let me know if you have any questions regarding this information during our free initial consultation.
